A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND

BESSIE SMITH
SONGWRITER: EDDIE GREEN
COUNTRY: U. S. A.
ALBUM: I’M VOILÁ ABOUT THAT THINGS
LABEL: COLUMBIA RECORDS
GENRE: BLUES
YEAR: 1928

Bessie Smith(April 15, 1894 – September 26, 1937) was an African-American blues singer widely renowned during the Jazz Age. Nicknamed the "Empress of the Blues", she was the most popular female blues singer of the 1930s. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, she is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and was a major influence on fellow blues singers, as well as jazz vocalists.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith was young when her parents died, and she and her six siblings survived by performing on street corners. She began touring and performed in a group that included Ma Rainey, and then went out on her own. Her successful recording career with Columbia Records began in 1923, but her performing career was cut short by a car crash that killed her at the age of 43.
[Verse 1]
My heart is sad and I'm all alone
My man's treating me mean
I regret the day that I was born
And the man I ever seen
My happiness is less today
My heart is broke, that's why I say

[Chorus:]
Lord, a good man is hard to find
You always get another kind
Just when you think that he's your pal
You look and find him foolin' 'round some old gal
Then you rave, you all crave
You want to see him in his grave
So if your man is nice, take my advice;
Hug him in the morning, kiss him at night
Give him plenty lovin'; treat your good man right
Oh, a good man is so hard to find

[Chorus:]
We always get that roughed old kind
Just when you think that he's your pal
You like and find him hangin' 'round some old gal
Then you rave, how you crave
You wanna see him dead layin' in his grave
So if your man is nice, take my advice
Hug him in the morning, kiss him at night
Give him plenty love madam, treat your man right
Cause a good man nowadays sure is hard to find.

SOLDIER OF FORTUNE

DEEP PURPLE
SONGWRITERS: David Coverdale & Ritchie Blackmore
COUNTRY: U. K.
ALBUM: STROMBRINGER
LABEL: PURPLE RECORDS
GENRE: BLUES ROCK
YEAR: 1974

Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, but their musical approach has changed over the years. Originally formed as a psychedelic rock and progressive rock band, they shifted to a heavier sound with their 1970 album Deep Purple in Rock. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
Deep Purple have had several line-up changes and an eight-year hiatus (1976–1984). The first four line-ups, which constituted the band's original 1968–1976 run, are officially indicated as Mark I (1968–1969), Mark II (1969–1973), Mark III (1973–1975) and Mark IV (1975–1976). Mark I comprised the founding members of Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore(guitar), Rod Evans(vocals), Jon Lord(keyboards), Ian Paice(drums) and Nick Simper(bass), while Mark II was the most commercially successful line-up, with Ian Gillan(vocals) and Roger Glover(bass) replacing Evans and Simper. Mark III saw David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes(bass and vocals) replace Gillan and Glover, while Mark IV featured Tommy Bolin(guitar) replacing Blackmore. Mark II was revived from 1984–1989 and again from 1992–1993, with Joe Lynn Turner(vocals) replacing Gillan in the intervening 1989–1992 period. Mark II definitively ended in 1993, when Blackmore left Deep Purple for the second and final time. He was replaced temporarily by Joe Satriani(guitar) and then permanently by Steve Morse(guitar). In 2002 Don Airey(keyboards) replaced Lord, which saw Deep Purple settle into its longest running line-up, unchanged for the next twenty years, until Morse announced his departure from the band in 2022. His place was taken by Simon McBride (guitar). Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Don Airey and Simon McBride comprise the current line-up of Deep Purple.
Stormbringer is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Deep Purple, released in November 1974 and the second studio album to feature the Mk III lineup including vocalist David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes.
I have often told you stories about the way
I lived the life of a drifter
Waiting for the day

When I'd take your hand and sing you songs
Then maybe you would say
"Come lay with me and love me"
And I would surely stay

But I feel I'm growing older
And the songs that I have sung
Echo in the distance
Like the sound
Of a windmill going round
Guess I'll always be a soldier of fortune

Many times I've been a traveller
I looked for something new
In days of old when nights were cold
I wandered without you

But those days I thought my eyes had seen you standing near
Though blindness is confusing
It shows that you're not here

Now I feel I'm growing older
And the songs that I have sung
Echo in the distance
Like the sound
Of a windmill going round
Guess I'll always be a soldier of fortune

I can hear the sound
Of a windmill going round
Guess I'll always be a soldier of fortune

I guess I'll always be
A soldier of fortune.

GENRE: BLUES
YEAR: 1956

Antoine Dominique Domino Jr. (February 26, 1928 – October 24, 2017), known as Fats Domino, was an American pianist, singer and songwriter. One of the pioneers of rock and roll music, Domino sold more than 65 million records. Born in New Orleans to a French Creole family, Domino signed to Imperial Records in 1949. His first single "The Fat Man" is cited by some historians as the first rock and roll single and the first to sell more than 1 million copies. Domino continued to work with the song's co-writer Dave Bartholomew, contributing his distinctive rolling piano style to Lloyd Price's "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (1952) and scoring a string of mainstream hits beginning with "Ain't That a Shame" (1955). Between 1955 and 1960, he had eleven Top 10 US pop hits. By 1955, five of his records had sold more than a million copies, being certified gold.
Domino was shy and modest by nature but made a significant contribution to the rock and roll genre. Elvis Presley declared Domino a "huge influence on me when I started out" and when they first met in 1959, described him as "the real king of rock 'n' roll". The Beatles were also heavily influenced by Domino.
Four of Domino's records were named to the Grammy Hall of Fame for their significance: "Blueberry Hill", "Ain't That a Shame", "Walking to New Orleans" and "The Fat Man". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of its first group of inductees in 1986. The Associated Press estimates that during his career, Domino "sold more than 110 million records".
I found my thrill
On Blueberry Hill
On Blueberry Hill
When I found you

The Moon stood still
On Blueberry Hill
And lingered until
My dream came true

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows you made
Were never to be

Though we're apart
You're part of me still
For you were my thrill
On Blueberry Hill

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made
Were only to be

Though we're apart
You're part of me still
For you were my thrill
On Blueberry Hill.

TERESA JAMES & THE RHYTHM TRAMPS
We have been wanting to capture our live show for a long time and it's exciting to finally have recordings that really reflect what we sound like live. These tracks were recorded at 4 different shows at Bogie's in Westlake Village (thank you, Ken) and because of everybody's tour schedules, we have 4 different versions of the Rhythm Tramps - all players that have brought a lot to this band over the years.  I am so incredibly lucky to be able to make music with every one of these guys and to be able to have all of these players together on this record is just amazing!
You know there are certain songs that remind you
Of people we have known
That take you back to places - you and I both have gone

And there are voices when you hear them
That make you laugh, make you cry
Memories that linger come and go by n by

Through the good times and bad – they touch us one and all
When the blues come knockin’ - when the blues come to call

Tied to the Whipping Post’ it was - the first time I heard him sing
That voice that reached me deep down
Man, he could sing anything

I didn't know yet who I was hearing
Didn't know the brothers or the band
Just knew that what they were bringing
The heart and the soul I understand
And now I hear that he joined his brother…
Yeah he gave the world his all
The day the blues came knocking
The day the blues came to call

Yeah, I just knew that what he was bringing
The heart and soul I understand

Maybe he heard Duane say – Brother, today is your day
And that voice that reached deep down
Went on to higher ground
The day the blues came to one and all
The day the blues came to call

The Dream

BLUES COUSINS
SONGWRITER: BLUES COUSINS
COUNTRY: RUSSIA
ALBUM: BLUES COUSINS
LABEL: RED GREY MATTER
GENRE: BLUES
YEAR: 2020

'Enjoy Your Day'' Buy Album https://t.ly/5XNNP by Blues Cousins. About, The Blues Cousins are said to be the "Best Blues Band in Moscow, Russia." Interesting! Obviously then, there must be several other blues bands in the city. This could virtually make Moscow a city with a better blues community than many in America. I for one am happy to see the REDS turning to the Blues. The band, which has been together for 15 years, consists of LEVAN LOMIDZE on guitar and lead vocals, SLAVA IGNATOV on drums and background vocals, and SERGEY PATRUSHIEV on bass. "ALIVE IN THE U. S. A." was recorded live at the Sunbanks Blues Festival, in Grand Coulee, WA, during the bands second trip to America. As is the case with many foreign blues bands, playing and being recorded in the country where the blues was born was a dream come true for the BLUES COUSINS. Although "ALIVE IN THE U. S. A." consists mostly of the 'usual' blues covers, there is nothing 'usual' at all about this band. These three young men have this interpretation thing under control. Their musical talents are masterful, and their stage presence and crowd handling are of veteran caliber. On top of that, I don't know what kind of dues they've paid, but they got the blues down pat. The CD opens with a nicely done version of "MESSIN' WITH THE KID". Right off the bat the cousins start kickin' some blues ass and never let up. The high energy, tight groove that they started off in already had me impressed. This relentless version of this track would probably have impressed Junior and Buddy as well. The next track, "NO MORE DOGGING", had me wondering just how long these guys could keep the frantic pace on this 75 minute performance. Here it was, only halfway through the second track, and their high energy level had me getting exhausted. This was one serious effort by all three players. "TALK TO ME" slowed it down to a pace where this dynamic rhythm section had a chance to take a short breather - real short. This one was all about the guitar and LEVAN handled it as well as any I've heard. This is one of the best tracks on the disc. The next track, "SWEET HOME SIBERIA"
...excuse me, I mean "SWEET HOME CHICAGO", was performed - in my opinion - as well as any blues band has ever performed it. They had the crowd 'hootin', howlin' and singin' along as if they were a veteran Chicago Blues Band performing to a hometown crowd at Legends. Midway through this live recording, THE BLUES COUSINS literally had the crowd in their hands. Now it was time to rock the joint and that's just what they did with a blistering version of "JOHNNY B. GOODE". "MY BABY IS COMING HOME", a slow soft ballad, featured LEVAN at his peak. Once again, this was blues guitar at some of it's finest. He was also quite impressive with his vocals. Although there is no question that this band is geared for the louder, faster, harder and higher energy style of blues, I found myself impressed at their ability to equally play a slower, sensitive style of play as well There is no question in my mind as to why THE BLUES COUSINS are the best blues band in Moscow. Hopefully, on their next visit to the States, Florida will be one of their stops. You can visit the Blues Cousins on the Web at: www.blues-cousins.ru/ Lyrics: The Dream
Last night I had a dream
My baby alrigth with me
Last night I had a dream
My baby alrigth with me, yeah

All alone since you left me
Ain't no man I used to be
Many days, many nights
I see the same dream, baby

Many days, many nights
I see the same dream
Alone since she left me
Ain't no man I used to be

Why don't you leave me baby?
Why don't you leave my dream alone?
Why don't you leave me baby?
Why don't you leave my dream alone?

Alone, please let me now
Why don't she stay?
Why don't she go

TWELVE BAR BLUES BAND
SONGWRITERS: ERIC CLAPTON & ROBERT CRAY
COUNTRY: NEEDERLANDS
ALBUM: TWELVE BAR BLUES BAND
LABEL: TRAMP RECORDS
GENRE: BLUES
YEAR: 2005

Twelve Bar Blues Band is een Netherlandbluesband begonnen in 2005. Group formed by: bluesharp: Jan J. Scherpenzel; Slideguitar: Kees Dusink; Drummer: Marcel Bakker; Bassist: Patrick Obrist & Rhythm Guitar: Randy Pears.
The 12-bar blues(or blues changes) is one of the most prominent chord progressions in popular music. The blues progression has a distinctive form in lyrics, phrase, chord structure, and duration. In its basic form, it is predominantly based on the I, IV, and V chords of a key. Mastery of the blues and rhythm changes are "critical elements for building a jazz repertoire".
The blues originated from a combination of work songs, spirituals, and early southern country music. The music was passed down through oral tradition. It was first written down by W. C. Handy, an African American composer and band leader. Its popularity led to the creation of "race records" and the popularity of blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainy. The style of music heard on race records was later called "rhythm and blues" (R & B). As the music became more popular, more people wanted to perform it. General patterns that existed in the blues were formalized, one of these being the 12-bar blues.
I can feel your body
When I'm lying in bed
There's too much confusion
Going around through my head

And it makes me so angry
To know that the flame still burns
Lord, why can't I get over?
Man when will I ever learn?

Old love, leave me alone
Old love, just go on home

I can see your face
But I know that it ain't real
Just an illusion
Caused by how I used to feel

And it's making me so angry
I know that the flame will always burn (flame will always burn)
I ain't never gonna get over
I know now that I'll never learn (never learn).

BLACK PARIS BLUES

MIGHTY MO RODGERS
SONGWRITER: MIGHTY MO RODGERS
COUNTRY: U. S. A.
ALBUM: BLACK PARIS BLUES
GENRE: BLUES
LABEL: ISABEL RECORDS
YEAR: 2003

Mighty Mo Rodgers(born July 24, 1942) is an American electric blues musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, who has released six albums to date. He has been influenced by the work of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Bland, Eddie Boyd, Jimmy Reed, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Willie Dixon.
Bonnie Raitt noted that "Mo Rodgers' music is a breath of fresh air in the blues/R&B world. He combines sly social commentary with a great funky sound… I love his voice. He's a welcome original.
Maurice Rodgers was born in East Chicago, Indiana, He studied classical piano, but was more influenced by witnessing the blues acts that performed at his father's nightclub. In the mid-1960s, the music produced by the American record label Stax also affected his musical ambitions. In high school, Rodgers formed his first band, the Rocketeers. After entering Indiana State College, he fronted the Maurice Rodgers Combo. His love of playing keyboards led Rodgers to leave college and relocate to Los Angeles, California, becoming a full-time musician.
He played the Farfisa electronic organ on Brenton Wood's 1967 hit "Gimme Little Sign".
In 1973, Rodgers co-produced the album Sonny & Brownie(A&M Records), by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. He also played keyboards on the album's cut. Following a spell as a session musician, Rodgers moved into songwriting for Motown and Chappell & Co. He also worked as a record producer before returning to education and obtaining a philosophy degree from California State University, Northridge. His first solo album, Blues Is My Wailin' Wall, was released in 1999 by Blue Thumb Records. The lyrics of several of the songs on the album present Rodgers's philosophical views of mankind.
In 2000, Rodgers performed at the Notodden Blues Festival. His European excursions have included concerts at the New Morning nightclub in Paris. In 2001, he performed on the album Memphis, recorded by Jean-Jacques Milteau, which also included contributions from Little Milton and Mighty Sam McClain. His own recordings continued with Red, White & Blues(2002); Black Paris Blues, a live album issued in 2004; and Redneck Blues(2007). His most recent release was Cadillac Jack in 2012.
Rodgers appeared at the 22 Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival in August 2014.
In 2019, he toured with Baba Sissoko and performed at several European blues festivals. In 2017, they had jointly released the album, Griot Blues.
Walking in the twilight hour
Looking for that magic light
I go to the Left Bank
To feel what is right
So far away from home
What can I do?
With these black Paris blues
I see the ghost of the past
They always thought they would last
Black Americans coming here
Freedom that was clear
So far away from home
What can you do?
With the black Paris black Paris blues

Walking in the twilight hour
Looking for that magic light
I go to the Left Bank
Try to feel what is right
So far away from home
What can you do?
With these black Paris blues

Blue Moon done the one
Said Sidney Bechet
Listen to the music
It will show the way

I see Brick Top's
Josephine Baker too
I see Chesfer Himes
Richard Wright
With their blues
I see Dexter Gordon
I see Miles and Diz
I see Memphis Slim playin’ slim
I see so many ghosts
From my black past
You know they thought it would last
What can you do?
With these Black Paris Blues
Parlez-vous Francais?
Can you hear me say?
I feel lost, it is true
Parlez-vous Francais?
I've lost my way
I can't get back home, it is true
Here’s where I'm gonna stay
For my blues I will play
What can you do?
With these black Paris blues
What can you do?
With these black Paris blues
Ride them through
I will always will know it' true
In the black Paris blues
What can you do?
Black Paris blues
But ride them through
Hey hey
Black Paris blues.

IT’S BEEN SO LONG

BLUES UNDERGROUND
SONGWRITER: YOAV LANDAU
COUNTRY: U. S. A.
ALBUM: ON MY WAY BACK HOME
GENRE: BLUES
LABEL: DEL-FI RECORDS
YEAR: 1995

The "Memphis Soul" of Stax Records' mid-Sixties sound has long been recognized by the chunky portions of Hammond organ and wry guitar licks served up by their legendary studio house band, Booker T. & The MG's, with a little soul dressing of Otis Redding on the side.
Likewise, the twin themes of exile and poverty (and perhaps the poor treatment of men by their big-legged women) in Mississippi Delta Blues runs deep and from as many sources as the rivers that flow into the region itself. From Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Little Milton, to the royal highness of guitarists Albert and B.B. King, the very essence of the Delta sound begs the curious question: "Was there something in the water?"
These two Southern sources are readily apparent in the grooves of the disc you're now listening to. Maybe "you don't miss your water till the well runs dry" but there's no chance of that with Blues Underground's generous flood of great songs. Listen to the deep, dark-hued voice of Roy Jones, who hails from the banks of the Mississippi river and Humphrey, Arkansas, sixty close miles from Memphis and the birthplace of these mighty sounds. Listen to the way he makes the woeful "St. James Infirmary" his own, or the way he breaks your heart with the group's self-penned title track "On My Way Back Home," and you'll hear what a sobering effect his liquid vocals have. There's a sense that he's lived the hard luck of "Born Under A Bad sign" one minute, then convincing us he means it when he tells us "The Thrill Is Gone" the next… and all this despite his incredible success on Broadway in the Eighties (where he may have been influenced as much by Paul Robeson as anyone else). That's the high watermark of his talent, to make us believe in the Blues he sings.
Now, add to this chilling cocktail the thick, oozing Hammond organ of Walt Thompson, the rippling bass lines of Michael Sunday, and the shimmering ice-blue rhythms of Dan Bachar's Fender guitar, and you have a potent drink, refreshing and cool. Like a subterranean river bubbling just below the surface, this is the sound of the Underground. (Bryan Thomas)
I don't know what I was thinking
Leaving my child behind
Now I suffer the curse and now I am blind
With all this anger, guilt and sadness
Coming to haunt me forever
I can't wait for the cliff at the end of the river

Is this revenge I am seeking?
Or seeking someone to avenge me?
Stuck in my own paradox, I wanna set myself free
Maybe I should chase and find
Before they'll try to stop it
It won't be long before I'll become a puppet

It's been so long
Since I last have seen my son lost to this monster
To the man behind the slaughter
Since you've been gone
I've been singing this stupid song so I could ponder
The sanity of your mother

I wish I lived in the present
With the gift of my past mistakes
But the future keeps luring in like a pack of snakes
Your sweet little eyes, your little smile is all I remember
Those fuzzy memories mess with my temper

Justification is killing me
But killing isn't justified
What happened to my son? I'm terrified
It lingers in my mind
And the thought keeps on getting bigger
I'm sorry my sweet baby, I wish I've been there

It's been so long
Since I last have seen my son lost to this monster
To the man behind the slaughter
Since you've been gone
I've been singing this stupid song so I could ponder
The sanity of your mother.

BLUES HAS GOT ME

PETE GAGE
Songwriter: pete gage
Country: u. k.
Album: left over blues
Label: goofin’ records
Genre: blues
Year: 2005

Peter Gage(born 12 February 1946, St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London) is a British blues musician. A vocalist, harmonica player and pianist, Gage is best known for fronting the Jet Harris Band and Dr. Feelgood, although he has also led his own band and has issued solo albums featuring artists such as Gypie Mayo.
Gage's father was a drummer. The younger Gage started his musical career as vocalist and harmonica player in a London band "The Sloane Squares", led by Gwyn Headley, in the mid-1960s. The Sloane Squares were well known for their tight music and live shows, and were supporting Jimi Hendrix when they were spotted by Jet Harris, the former Shadows bass player, who asked them to become his backing band. The Jet Harris single "My Lady" c/w "You Don't Live Twice" (1967) features Pete Gage on vocals.
Gage left Jet Harris in 1968 but continued performing with numerous bands, including London based soul-blues-band The Blazers. He moved to the West Country, joining the Pink Torpedoes from 1988 to 1992. He also sang and played Hammond organ in his own band, the original Pete Gage Band from 1992–1995. The band was also known as the Pete Gage Expression, whose album, Give it With a Feeling was issued in May 1995.
After the death of their frontman Lee Brilleaux, Dr. Feelgood had a year's break before agreeing to audition for a new vocalist/harpist. After an initial audition followed by a studio recording and a photoshoot, Gage joined Dr Feelgood in June 1995. After initial opposition from some long-term fans, "because Lee Brilleaux wasn't there", Gage became accepted. They resumed a heavy touring schedule and Gage recorded their 1996 On the Road Again album. He also appears on their 1997 release Twenty Five Years of Dr. Feelgood.
Whilst with the Feelgoods, Gage recorded a piano-based blues-album Out of Hours, which was recorded in Finland, and released in 1997 by Finnish record company Goofin' Records. The tensions of constant touring in Dr Feelgood mounted, and it was "mutually agreed that Pete would stand down".
Gage left Dr Feelgood in September 1999 to focus on various other projects, the main one being the development of his own blues band The Pete Gage Band in which he leads from the piano and highlights his gritty vocals. This band continues to feature prominently in the pubs and clubs in the South-West of England. He also continued performing with different bands in England, Spain and particularly Finland, where he has a "large and loyal fan base". An offshoot from his current blues band is The Pete Gage Blues Trio, featuring Paul Hartshorn on guitar, Duncan Kingston on double bass, and Pete himself on piano and vocals, playing classic blues standards in a laid-back style. He also spent 12 years from 2000 as the vocalist/frontman for the Mike Hoddinott Blues All-Stars
In 2010, Gage made an album, Tough Talk(GRCD 6165), recorded and released in Finland. Backed by Finnish band Doctor's Order, (who normally back Johnny Spence, formerly of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates) the album features ex Feelgoods guitarist, and Gages's close friend, the late Gypie Mayo on six tracks. In May 2013 Gage played the Dagenham Roundhouse as part of the Big Blues Jam and reappeared there in September 2013 with the re-united Pink Torpedoes.
Blues has got me,
and I have to make a brand new start.
Blues has got me,
and I have to make a brand new start.
Nothing I can do to please you babe,
so I guess we have to part.
You were the one,
told me your love was true.
You were the one, babe,
told me your love was true.
But you left me for another man,
now what I’m gonna do?

So many times,
I’ve asked you to come home.
So many times, babe, versuri.us
I’ve asked you to come home.
But I’ve finally realized,
that you’re really gone.
Blues has got me,
blues has gotta hold on.
Blues has got me, babe,
blues has gotta hold on.
Only one thing I ask you,
don’t forget me please.

If I said it wasn't true

Slightly hungover
Maybe, maybe slightly blues
Slightly hungover
Maybe slightly blues

I never had the blues baby
Before I meet you

Slightly hungover
Slightly hungover of you
Slightly hungover
Slightly hungover of you

You shouldn't lie baby
No, no
To someone who loves you
And I do

Morning after
Morning after you
Morning after
Morning after you
Morning who won't last forever
And I'll be over with you
And I'll be over with you
And I'll be over with you.

Ray Charles Robinson Sr. (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist and alto saxophonist. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as "The Genius". Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". Charles was blinded during childhood, possibly due to glaucoma.
Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records. He contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums. While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.
Charles's 1960 hit "Georgia On My Mind" was the first of his three career Nº 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. His 1962 album Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music became his first album to top the Billboard 200. Charles had multiple singles reach the Top 40 on various Billboard charts: 44 on the US R&B singles chart, 11 on the Hot 100 singles chart, 2 on the Hot Country singles charts.
Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by Louis Jordan and Charles Brown. He had a lifelong friendship and occasional partnership with Quincy Jones. Frank Sinatra called Ray Charles "the only true genius in show business," although Charles downplayed this notion. Billy Joel said, "This may sound like sacrilege, but I think Ray Charles was more important than Elvis Presley".
For his musical contributions, Charles received the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and the Polar Music Prize. He was one of the inaugural inductees at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He has won 18 Grammy Awards (5 posthumously), the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, and 10 of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone ranked Charles Nº 10 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and Nº 2 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2022, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
My world is like a river as dark as it is deep
Night after night the past slips in and gathers all my sleep
My days are just and endless stream of emptiness to me
Filled only by the fleeting moments of her memories

Sweet memories
Sweet memories
She slipped into the silence of my dreams again last night
Wandering from room to room, she's turning on each light
Her laughter spills like water from the river to the sea
And I'm swept away from sadness clinging to her memories
Sweet memories
Sweet memories.
