Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton(born June 22, 1953) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist. Her career has spanned over 40 years. Her album She's So Unusual(1983) was the first debut album by a female artist to achieve four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100—"Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through the Night"—and earned Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards in 1985. Her success continued with the soundtrack for the motion picture The Goonies(1985) and her second record True Colors(1986). This album included the number-one single "True Colors" and "Change of Heart", which peaked at number three. In 1989, she had a hit with "I Drove All Night".
Since 1983, Lauper has released eleven studio albums and participated in many other projects. In 2010, Memphis Blues became Billboard's most successful blues album of the year, remaining at number one on the Billboard Blues Albums chart for 13 consecutive weeks. In 2013, she won the Tony Award for best original score for composing the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, making her the first woman to win the category by herself. The musical was awarded five other Tonys including Tony Award for Best New Musical. In 2014, Lauper was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for the cast recording. In 2016, the West End production won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards.
Lauper has sold over 50 million records worldwide. She has won awards at the Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, the New York's Outer Critics Circle, MTV Video Music Awards(VMAs), Billboard Awards, and American Music Awards(AMAs). An inductee into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lauper is one of the few singers to win three of the four major American entertainment awards (EGOT). She won the inaugural Best Female Video prize at the 1984 VMAs for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". This music video is recognized by MTV, VH1 and Rolling Stone as one of the greatest music videos of the era. She is featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Women Who Rock exhibit. Her debut album is included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, while "Time After Time" is included in VH1's list of the 100 Best Songs of the Past 25 years. VH1 has ranked Lauper Nº 58 of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll.
Sisters of Avalon is the fifth studio album by American singer Cyndi Lauper. It was released in Japan on October 15, 1996 and worldwide on April 1, 1997, by Sony Music Entertainment. Thematically the album expounded on the issue of complacency and ignorance in popular culture and the discrimination of minorities, gays, and women. Songs like "Love to Hate" and "You Don't Know" address the entertainment industry and media and their corruption. "Ballad of Cleo and Joe" is a song about the double life of a cross dresser. "Say a Prayer" is about the AIDS epidemic.
The album was heavily praised by multiple music critics due to Lauper's creative growth and eclectic themes. However, the album's release was delayed and sold only 56,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Since its release, the album has been met with continued praise including the Songwriters' Hall of Fame noting the title track as one of Lauper's key songs in her catalog.
You don't know where you belong
You should be more careful
As you follow blindly along
You just need to belong somehow

Relying on rhetoric
Not well versed on topics
Any idea what you're talking about?
Revisions of history
Fair well in some company
But don't shove that bullshit down my throat

You don't know where you belong
You should be more careful
As you follow blindly along
To find something to swear to
Till you don't know what's right from wrong
You just need to belong somehow

Left suppresses right
Right suppresses left
So what's the left, and what's right?
You're told what to wear
You're told what to like
I'd be nice if you'd think for yourself sometime
But you don't

Now you don't know where you belong
You should be more careful
As you follow blindly along
To find something to swear to
Till you don't know what's right from wrong
You just need to belong somehow
You just need to belong somehow

Mix sheer hypocrisy with mediocrity
You'll play it safe every time
So life turns up empty
And you're so dissatisfied
Who are you blaming blaming this time this time?
Don't you know?

Now you don't know where you belong
You should be more careful
As you follow blindly along
To find something to swear to
Till you don't know what's right from wrong
You just need to belong somehow
You just need to belong somehow

You don't, you don't know where
You don't know where you belong
You don't know where you belong
You don't know where you belong.

Known for his sweet and soulful vocals, Vandross has sold over 40 million records worldwide. He achieved eleven consecutive Platinum albums and eight Grammy Awards, including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance four different times. In 2004, Vandross won a total of four Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for a song recorded not long before his death, "Dance with My Father".
Vandross worked as a backing vocalist in the 1970s, and appeared on albums by artists such as Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Todd Rundgren, Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Ben E. King, Stevie Wonder, and Donna Summer. He later became a lead singer of the group Change, which released its Gold-certified debut album, The Glow of Love, in 1980 on Warner/RFC Records. After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, Never Too Much, in 1981.
His hit songs include "Never Too Much", "Here and Now", "Any Love", "Power of Love/Love Power", "I Can Make It Better" and "For You to Love". Many of his songs were covers of original music by other artists such as "If This World Were Mine" (duet with Cheryl Lynn), "Since I Lost My Baby", "Superstar", "I (Who Have Nothing)" and "Always and Forever". Duets such as "The Closer I Get to You" with Beyoncé, "Endless Love" with Mariah Carey and "The Best Things in Life Are Free" with Janet Jackson were all hit songs in his career.
Never Too Much is the debut solo studio album by American singer Luther Vandross, released on August 12, 1981, by Epic Records. Composed by Vandross himself, the album reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA). Never Too Much earned Vandross two Grammy Award nominations in 1982, including Best New Artist and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male.
The album's title track topped the Black Singles chart for two weeks. Vandross's rendition of Dionne Warwick's 1964 song "A House Is Not a Home" became one of his signature songs, and received attention for its transformation into an "epic", since its duration was extended to seven minutes. In 2020, the album was ranked number 362 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
A chair is still a chair, even when there's no one sittin' there
But a chair is not a house and a house is not a home
When there's no one there to hold you tight
And no one there you can kiss goodnight
Whoa, ohh, girl

A room is still a room, oh, even when there's nothin' there but gloom
But a room is not a house and a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart

Now and then I call your name
And suddenly your face appears
But it's just a crazy game
When it ends, it ends in tears

Pretty little darling, have a heart, don't let one mistake keep us apart
I'm not meant to live alone, turn this house into a home
When I climb the stairs and turn the key
Oh, please be there, sayin' that you're still in love with me, yeah

I'm not meant to live alone, turn this house into a home
When I climb the stairs and turn the key
Oh, please be there, still in love
I said still in love
Still in love with me, yeah

Are you gonna be in love with me?
I want you and need you to be, yeah
Still in love with me
Say you're gonna be in love with me
It's drivin' me crazy to think that my baby
Couldn't be still in love with me

Are you gonna be, say you're gonna be
Are you gonna be, say you're gonna be
Are you gonna be, say you're gonna be
Well, well, well, well
Still in love, so in love, still in love with me?

Are you gonna be
Say that you're gonna be

Still in love with me, yeah
With me, ohh
Still in love with me, yeah.

BRING IT ON HOME TO ME

SAM COOK
SONGWRITER: SAM COOK
COUNTRY: U. S. A.
ALBUM: FOREVER 32 HITS
LABEL: RCA RECORDS
GENRE: SOUL
YEAR: 1975

Samuel Cook(January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer and songwriter. Considered to be a pioneer and one of the most influential soul artists of all time, Cooke is commonly referred to as the "King of Soul" for his distinctive vocals, notable contributions to the genre and significance in popular music.
Cooke was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi and later relocated to Chicago with his family at a young age, where he began singing as a child and joined the Soul Stirrers as lead singer in the 1950s. Going solo in 1957, Cooke released a string of hit songs, including "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Wonderful World", "Chain Gang", "Twistin' the Night Away", "Bring It On Home to Me", and "Good Times". During his eight-year career, Cooke released 29 singles that charted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Pop Singles chart, as well as 20 singles in the Top Ten of Billboard's Black Singles chart.
In 1964, Cooke was shot and killed by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles. After an inquest and investigation, the courts ruled Cooke's death to be a justifiable homicide. His family has since questioned the circumstances of his death.
Cooke's pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the work of Otis Redding and James Brown. AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
Cooke was also a central part of the civil rights movement, using his influence and popularity with the White and Black populations to fight for the cause. He was friends with boxer Muhammad Ali, activist Malcolm X and football player Jim Brown, who together campaigned for racial equality.
Cooke was born Samuel Cook in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 1931 (he added the "e" to his last name in 1957 to signify a new start to his life). He was the fifth of eight children of the Rev. Charles Cook, a minister in the Church of Christ(Holiness), and his wife, Annie Mae. One of his younger brothers, L.C. (1932–2017), later became a member of the doo-wop band Johnny Keyes and the Magnificents.
The family moved to Chicago in 1933. Cook attended Doolittle Elementary and Wendell Phillips Academy High School in Chicago, the same school that Nat "King" Cole had attended a few years earlier. Cooke began his career with his siblings in a group called the Singing Children when he was six years old. He first became known as lead singer with the Highway Q.C.'s when he was a teenager, having joined the group at the age of 14. During this time, Cooke befriended fellow gospel singer and neighbor Lou Rawls, who sang in a rival gospel group.
If you ever
Change your mind
About leaving
Leaving me behind
Baby, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)

I know I laughed
When you left
But now I know
I only hurt myself
Baby, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)

I'll give you jewelry
And money too
That ain't all
That ain't all I'll do for you
Baby, if you bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)

You know
I'll always be your slave
Till I'm buried
Buried in my grave
Oh honey, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)

One more thing
I tried to treat you right
But you stayed out
Stayed out at night
But I forgive you
Bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
Yeah (yeah).

Peter Gene Hernandez(born October 8, 1985), known professionally as Bruno Mars, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is known for his stage performances, retro showmanship, and for performing in a wide range of musical styles, including pop, R&B, funk, soul, reggae, disco, and rock. Mars is accompanied by his band, the Hooligans, who play a variety of instruments, such as electric guitar, bass, piano, keyboards, drums, and horns, and also serve as backup singers and dancers.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mars moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to pursue a musical career. In 2009, he co-founded the production team The Smeezingtons, responsible for various successful singles for Mars himself and other artists. He rose to fame in 2010 buoyed by the success of "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy, both of which featured his vocals. That year, Mars released his debut studio album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which blended pop with reggae and R&B. It spawned the international number-one singles "Just the Way You Are", "Grenade", and "The Lazy Song". Drawing inspiration from disco, funk, rock, reggae and soul genres, his second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox(2012), was his first number one on the Billboard 200. It amassed two Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs, "Locked Out of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man".
In 2014, Mars was featured on Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk", which topped various music charts, spending a total of fourteen and seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, respectively. Mars's third studio album, the R&B-focused 24K Magic(2016), received seven Grammy Awards, winning the major categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. The album also yielded the top-five singles "24K Magic", "That's What I Like" (his seventh Billboard Hot 100 number-one single), and a remix of "Finesse" featuring Cardi B. In 2021, Mars and Anderson .Paak, as Silk Sonic, released the collaborative studio album An Evening with Silk Sonic, which delved into 1970s R&B and soul and was led by the chart-topping single "Leave the Door Open". It received four Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
An Evening with Silk Sonic is the debut studio album by American musical superduo Silk Sonic, composed of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. It was released on November 12, 2021, by Aftermath Entertainment and Atlantic Records. Silk Sonic reunited with Christopher Brody Brown and James Fauntleroy to write the album. They recruited American musician Bootsy Collins, who came up with the name for Mars and Paak's duo, for narration and American record producer D'Mile to compose the album. Recording sessions for An Evening with Silk Sonic took place in 2017 and between early 2020 to mid-2021 at Shampoo Press & Curl Studios.
An Evening with Silk Sonic debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 104,000 equivalent album units and became Mars's second and .Paak's first number-one album on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It also peaked in the top-five in Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, and produced five singles: "Leave the Door Open" and "Smokin out the Window", which were commercially successful, while "Skate" charted moderately in various countries. Two other singles "Love's Train", a cover of Con Funk Shun's song, and "After Last Night" were made available for consumption in 2022, with each one of them having minor commercial success. "Leave the Door Open" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and New Zealand, becoming Mars's eighth and .Paak's first number-one song in the United States. The album was certified gold by Music Canada(MC) and platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA).
An Evening with Silk Sonic received universal acclaim, and is the most acclaimed studio album of Mars' career, with reviewers praising its retro sensibility and the chemistry between Mars and .Paak. At the 64th Grammy Awards in 2022, "Leave The Door Open" won four Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance and Best R&B song. Several publications listed the album as one of the best records of the year. The album was also promoted via An Evening with Silk Sonic at Park MGM(2022), along with a number of performances at various award shows.
Said baby, said baby, said baby
What you doing? (What you doing?)
Where you at? (Where you at?)
Oh, you got plans? (You got plans?)
Don't say that (shut your trap)
I'm sipping wine (sip, sip) in a robe (drip, drip)
I look too good (look too good) to be alone (woo-woo)
My house clean (house clean), my pool warm (pool warm)
Just shaved (smooth like a newborn)
We should be dancing, romancing
In the east wing and the west wing
Of this mansion, what's happening?

I ain't playing no games
Every word that I say is coming straight from the heart
So if you tryna lay in these arms

I'ma leave the door open
(I'ma leave the door open)
I'ma leave the door open, girl
(I'ma leave the door open, hoping)
That you feel the way I feel
And you want me like I want you tonight, baby
(Tell me that you're coming through)

Ooh, you're so sweet (so sweet), so tight (so tight)
I won't bite (ah-ah), unless you like (unless you like)
If you smoke (what you smoke?) I got the haze (Purple Haze)
And if you're hungry, girl, I got fillets (woo-woo)
Ooh, baby, don't keep me (waiting)
There's so much love we could be making (shamone)
I'm talking kissing, cuddling
Rose petals in the bathtub
Girl, let's jump in, it's bubbling

I ain't playing no games
Every word that I say is coming straight from the heart
So (if you) if you (tryna) tryna lay in these arms

I'ma leave the door open
(I'ma leave the door open)
I'ma leave the door open, girl
(I'ma leave the door open, hoping)
That you feel the way I feel
And you want me like I want you tonight, baby
(Tell me that you're coming through) come on, girl

La-la-la, la-la-la-la (I need you, baby)
La-la-la, la-la-la-la (I gotta see you, baby)
La-la-la, la-la-la-la (girl, I'm tryna give you this)
Ah-ah-ah-ah, ah-ah

Hey-hey, I'ma leave my door open, baby (I'ma leave the door open)
I'ma leave, I'ma leave my door open, girl
(I'ma leave the door open, hoping) and I'm hoping, hoping
That you feel the way I feel
And you want me like I want you tonight, baby
(Tell me that you're coming through) woo!
La-la-la, la-la-la-la (tell me)
(Tell me that you're coming through)

Woo-woo-woo-woo, woo-woo-woo, woo-woo-woo
Woo-woo-woo-woo, woo-woo-woo, woo-woo
La-la-la, la-la-la-la (la-la-la, la-la)
(Tell me that you're coming through)
Girl, I'm here just waiting for you (oh!)
Come on over, I'll adore you (I gotta know!)
La-la-la, la-la-la-la (I'm waiting, waiting, waiting)
(Tell me that you're coming through) for you
Girl, I'm here just waiting for you
Come on over, I'll adore you

¿Quedarte puedes?
Porque la vida duele
Duele demasiado aquí sin ti

Aquí sin ti
Aquí sin ti
Eh, eh, eh, eh
Oh, oh

Aquí yo estoy y tú no estás
Y me distrae la publicidad

Entre horarios y el tráfico, trabajo y pienso en ti
Entre puerta y teléfono, tu foto me hablará

De tardes negras
Que no hay tiempo ni espacio
Y nadie nunca entenderá

¿Quedarte puedes?
Porque la vida duele
Duele demasiado aquí sin ti

Y lucho contra el silencio hablando con él
Y he limado tu ausencia solo junto a mis brazos

Y si me quieres, tú ya no me verás
Si menos me quieres, yo más estaré allí
Y si me quieres, tú ya no me verás
Si menos me quieres, yo más estaré allí

¡Yo más estaré allí, allí, allí!
¡Lo juro!
Uuh, uuh, uh
Uh, uuh, uh

De tardes negras
Que no hay tiempo ni espacio
Y nadie nunca entenderá

¿Quedarte puedes?
Porque la vida duele
Duele demasiado aquí sin ti

Aquí sin ti
Aquí sin ti
Eh, eh, eh, eh
Eh, eh
Aquí sin ti.

Let me tell you now all that's on my mind
For a love like yours is oh so very hard to find
Looked inside myself now I'm very sure
There can only be you for me
I need you more and more...

You turned me inside out
And you showed me what life was about
Only you
The only one that stole my heart away
I wanna do all I can just to show you
Make you understand
Only you
The only one that stole my heart away

When you're in my arms
When I'm close to you
There's a magic in your touch that just comes shining through
Want you everyday
Want you every night
There can only be you for me
You make it seem so right
Oh, girl
Cause you turned me inside out

And you showed me what life was about
Only you
The only one that stole my heart away
Oh, a-a-a-h
Mmmm
In my mind there's no other love
You're the only girl my heart and soul is thinking of

Only you only me (only me)
There can never ever be another
That understands the way that I feel inside
Cause you turned me inside out

And you showed me what life was about
Only you
The only one that stole my heart away
Yeah you turned me inside out
And you showed me what life was about
Only you
The only one that stole... my heart away
(You stole my heart away)
You stole it
(You stole my heart away)
Only you
The only one that stole my heart away
Yeah you
(You stole my heart away)
Oh, you stole it
(You stole my heart away)
Only you
The only one that stole... my heart away
(You stole my heart away)
(You stole my heart away).
