1984 album, The Unforgettable Fire, it was released as the album's lead single in
September 1984. Written about Martin Luther King Jr., the song received mixed
critical reviews at the time, but it was a major commercial success for the
band and has since become one of the band's most popular songs.
"Pride" appeared on the compilation The Best of 1980–1990 as the
opening track, and on the 2006 compilation U218 Singles.
The song ranked number 388
on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and is included
in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come, he to justify
One man to overthrow
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
(nobody like you...)
Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love...
One man come and go
One man come, he to justify
One man to overthrow
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss
In the name of love
