Leona Louise
Lewis(born 3 April 1985) is a British singer, songwriter, actress, model and
activist. She was born and raised in the London Borough of Islington, and she
attended the BRIT Schoolfor Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon. Lewis achieved
national recognition when she won the third seriesof The X Factor in 2006,
winning a £1 million
recording contract with Syco Music. Her
winner's single, a cover of Kelly Clarkson's "A
Moment Like This", peaked at number one for four weeks on the UK Singles Chartand broke a world record by reaching 50,000 digital downloads within
30 minutes. In February 2007, Lewis signed a five-album contract in the United
States with Clive Davis's record
label, J Records.
Lewis's success continued with the release of her debut studio album, Spirit(2007), which was certified 10×
platinum in the UK and became the fourth best-selling album of the
2000sand one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history. According
to the Official
Charts Company, Spirit is the best-selling debut album
by a female artist in the 21st century. The lead single, "Bleeding Love",
spent seven weeks at number one in the UK and was the best-selling single of 2007. In the
US, it was the best-selling single of 2008 and Lewis was proclaimed Best New
Artist by Billboardthe same year. In 2009, she released her second studio album, Echo, and
recorded the theme song, "I See You", for the
film Avatar.
In 2011, Lewis released the single "Collide", a
collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii, and her debut extended play, Hurt: The EP. Her third
studio album, Glassheart(2012),
marked a new creative direction for Lewis, drawing inspiration from dubstepand electronic music. She began
to record material for her first Christmas album during her Glassheart Tour, which
took place in mid 2013. Christmas,
with Lovewas released later that year and its lead single,
"One More Sleep",
peaked at number three in the UK. With this chart entry, Lewis became the first
British female solo artist to reach the top five with eight singles, surpassing
Olivia
Newton-John's record of seven.
In 2014, she made her film debut in Walking on Sunshine, and her
fourth studio album, I Am, was released
the following year. In 2016, Lewis made her Broadwaydebut as Grizabellain the revival of Andrew
Lloyd Webber's musical Cats, and the
following year, she signed a modelling contract with Wilhelmina Models. She then
collaborated with Calum Scotton the single "You Are The Reason" (2018),
and had a recurring role on the American television series The Oath(2019). In 2021,
Lewis joined the Paramount Plusshow Queen of The Universeas a judge.
According to her record company, as of 2021, Lewis has sold over 35
million records worldwide. She has won two MOBO Awards, an MTV
Europe Music Award, and two World
Music Awards. She is also a six-time BRIT Awardand three-time Grammy Awardnominee.
"Bleeding
Love" is a song recorded by English singer Leona Lewisfor her debut studio album Spirit (2007). Jointly
composed by Jesse McCartneyand Ryan Tedder, and
produced by Tedder, the song is the album's lead single;
officially, it was Lewis's official second single and followed "A
Moment Like This". It was released in the United Kingdom and
Ireland in October 2007. Debuting at number one on the UK Singles Chartand the Irish
Singles Chart, "Bleeding Love" became the best-selling
single of 2007 in both countries. After the single's release, it became a major
international hit and was the best-selling single of 2008 worldwide. The single
reached number one in 35 countries, including Japan, France, Germany and the
United States, making it only the second song in history to achieve this feat, Elton John's "Candle
in the Wind 1997" being the first. The accompanying music video
first aired on 17 October 2007, and was uploaded to YouTube on the same day.
"Bleeding Love" has sold more than one million copies in the United
Kingdom, and over 4 million digital downloads in the United
States, where it was the best-selling digital song there in 2008. It was named
the 17th most successful song in the US from 2000 to 2009. "Bleeding
Love" has charted on the UK Singles Chart in three different years: in
2007 it peaked at number one; 2008 at number 76; and 2009 at number 97. It sold
788,000 copies in the UK alone during 2007. "Bleeding Love" was
nominated for Record
of the Yearand Best Female Pop Vocal Performanceat the 51st
Grammy Awards. At the 2008 Brit Awardsit was nominated for Best British Single. It is Lewis's biggest hit
in the US to date and remains her signature
song. As of 2021, the song has been streamed over two
billion times.

Sarah Lois Vaughan(March 27, 1924 – April 3,
1990) was an American jazzsinger.
Nicknamed "Sassy" and "The Divine One", she
won four Grammy Awards,
including the Lifetime Achievement Award. She was given an NEA Jazz MastersAward in 1989. Critic Scott Yanowwrote that she had "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th
century
Vaughan was born in Newark, New Jersey,
to Asbury "Jake" Vaughan, a carpenter by trade who played guitar and
piano, and Ada Vaughan, a laundress who sang in the church choir, migrants from
Virginia. The Vaughans lived in a house on Brunswick Street in Newark for
Vaughan's entire childhood. Jake was deeply religious. The family was active in New Mount Zion
Baptist Church at 186 Thomas Street. Vaughan began piano lessons at the age of
seven, sang in the church choir, and played piano for rehearsals and services.
She
developed an early love for popular music on records and the radio. In
the 1930s, she frequently saw local and touring bands at the Montgomery Street
Skating Rink. By her mid-teens, she began venturing illegally into Newark's
night clubs and performing as a pianist and singer at the Piccadilly Club and
the Newark
Airport.
Vaughan attended East Side High School, then
transferred to Newark Arts
High School, which opened in 1931. As her nocturnal adventures as a
performer overwhelmed her academic pursuits, she dropped out of high school
during her junior year to concentrate on music.

The Cascades was an American vocal groupbest
known for the single"Rhythm of the Rain",
recorded in 1962, an international hitthe following year.
In 1960, the Silver Strands were a group of United States Navypersonnel serving on the USS Jason(AR-8)based in San Diego,
California. They recruited John Gummoe, who
originally acted as manager, then left the Navy to become The Thundernotes. The
group's membership consisted of John Claude "John" Gummoe (born
August 2, 1938) (lead vocals), Lenny Green (vocal and lead guitar), Dave Wilson
(drums and vocal), Dave Stevens (bass), and Art Eastlick (rhythm guitar). Their
first and only recording, "Thunder Rhythm" (and "Payday" on
the reverse of the 45rpm) was with DelFi Records of Hollywood, owned and
managed by Bob Keane. It was a surf-type instrumental. Lenny
left soon after to pursue his own goals and the group acquired Eddie Snyder
(guitar), David Szabo (keyboards),
Dave Stevens (bass) and Dave
Wilson (drums).
Influenced by the Beach Boys, the
group became more interested in vocal harmony.
They recordeddemosand signed with
Barry De Vorzonat Valiant Records, a
subsidiary of Warner Bros., and
changed their name to The Cascades – inspired by a nearby box of dishwashing
detergent. Their first release, "There's a Reason", became a minor
regional hit; in the summer of 1962, they went to Gold Star Studiosin Los Angeles to record a song Gummoe wrote in his Navy days on
watch during a thunderstorm. The song was to become "Rhythm of the Rain"
and the musicianson the recordingincluded the "Wrecking
Crew"-including Hal Blaineon
drums, Carol Kayeon bass,
and Glen Campbellon guitar-arrangedby Perry Botkin Jr.. "Rhythm of the Rain"
was issued in November 1962. It rose to Nº 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100chartin early 1963,
becoming a major hit in over 80 countries. It peaked at Nº 5 in the UK Singles Chart. "Rhythm
of the Rain" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
The Cascades continued to record, produced an
album and several additional singles,
including the follow-up "The Last Leaf", but did not match the charm
or success of their big hit. The group continued to receive major radio airplayin their hometown, San Diego. The Cascades' cover version of Bob Lind's
"Truly Julie's Blues" received spins on KCBQand KGBin 1966, and
their song "Maybe the Rain Will Fall" fared well on San Diego radiocharts in
mid-1969.
The group was active, played local San Diego clubslike The Cinnamon
Cinder, and at other times, toured widely. In 1967,
The Cascades appeared onscreen in the Crown International Pictures teen comedy
adventure film, Catalina Caper, which included their version of a song written
by Ray Davies of the Kinks, "There's A New World Opening For Me"
