Uma balada jazzy blues, "Cry Me a River" foi originalmente escrita para Ella Fitzgerald cantar no filme cujo cenário era a década de 1920, Pete Kelly's Blues, que estreou em 1955, mas a canção foi cortada da produção. Então, Fitzgerald gravou a composição e a lançou em Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!, em 1961.

A primeira e mais famosa gravação da música foi feita pela cantora e atriz Julie London, em 1955. A atuação sedutora de London no filme The Girl Can't Help It, de 1956, tornou-o um blockbuster, com milhões de vendas (#9 US/#22 UK).
