Armstrong (born 25 December 1971), known professionally as Dido(/ˈdaɪdoʊ/DY-doh),
is an English singer and songwriter. She attained international success with
her debut álbum No Angel(1999). Hit singles from the album
include "Here with Me" and "Thank You". It sold
over 21 million copies worldwide, and won her several awards, including two Brit Awards: Best British Female and Best British Album, and the
MTV Europe Music Award for Best New Act. The first verse of "Thank You" is
sampled in "Stan", a
collaboration with American rapper Eminem.
Her next album, Life for Rent(2003),
continued her success with the hit singles "White Flag"
and "Life for Rent".
In 2004, Dido performed with other British and Irish artists in the Band Aid 20 version of the
charity single "Do They Know
It's Christmas?".
Dido's first two albums are among the best-selling albums in UK chart history, and both are in the top 10 best-selling albums of the 2000s in the UK.
Her third studio album, Safe Trip Home(2008),
received critical acclaim but failed to duplicate the commercial success of her
previous efforts. She was nominated for an Academy Award for the song "If I Rise".
Dido was ranked No. 98 on the Billboard chart of the top Billboard 200 artists of the 2000s (2000–2009) based on the success of her albums
in the first decade of the 21st century.
Dido made a comeback in 2013, releasing her
fourth studio álbum Girl Who Got Away, which
reached the top 5 in the UK. Having taken time out of the music industry to
raise her son, she reappeared on stage at the 2013 Reading and
Leeds festival where she reunited with Eminem. Dido
released her fifth studio album, Still on My Mind,
on 8 March 2019 and embarked on her first tour in 15 years in support of the
new album.
In May 2019, Dido received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and
Authors.
"White Flag" is a song by English
singer-songwriter Dido,
released as the lead single from her
second studio album. Life for Rent. The song was first released to
US radio on 7 July 2003 and was issued in the United Kingdom as a physical
single on 1 September 2003. The song performed well on record
charts around the world, peaking at number one in Australia, Austria,
the Czech Republic, Germany,
Italy, Norway, and Portugal.
In Dido's native UK, it reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, and in
the United States, it climbed to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music
video, directed by Joseph Kahn,
features actor David Boreanaz as Dido's love interest.
"White Flag" was nominated for the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 46th Grammy Awards but lost to Christina
Aguilera's "Beautiful".
It won the Best British Single at the 2004 Brit Awards.
The song has featured in several TV series including Smallville, The Inbetweeners, Medium,
The Sopranos, Tru Calling, Cold Case, Winners & Losers, as well
as in the films Perfect
Stranger, Mommy and Bad Education.
Carly Rae Jepsen performed a cover version of the song on Canadian Idol. "White Flag" ranked at
number 317 on Blender's list "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were
Born"
I know you think that
I shouldn't still love you, or tell you that
But if I didn't say it, well, I'd still have felt it
Where's the sense in that?
I promise I'm not
trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were
But I will go down
with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I know I left too
much mess and destruction
To come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of it's over
Then I'm sure that that makes sense
But I will go down
with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on
I will go down with
this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I will go down with
this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I will go down with
this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be.
