     Foi o mais bem sucedido cantor Afro-Americano dos anos 50, e muitos críticos especialistas afirmam que o rock 'n roll nasceu em 1950 com o seu primeiro grande sucesso, “Fat Man”.

      Cantor, compositor e pianista, iniciou carreira em 1949 interpretando R & B, passando a ser um freqüentador assíduo das paradas de sucesso daquele estilo. Porém, só veio a ser reconhecido pelo público branco a partir de 1955 com “Ain’t That a Shame” e, em seguida, com “Blueberry Hill” de 1956, que ocuparam posições de destaque na “Billboard”.
