for his album Mathis Magic in 1979. Mathis has also recorded six albums of Christmas music.
In a 1968 interview, Mathis cited Lena Horne,
Nat King Cole,
and Bing Crosby among his musical influences.
"Wild Is the Wind" is a song
written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film Wild
Is the Wind. Johnny Mathis recorded the song for the film and released it as a single in
November 1957. Mathis' version reached No. 22 on the Billboard chart.
It was nominated for na Academy Award for Best Song in 1958,
but lost to "All the Way" by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn from The Joker's Wild.
The
song has been recorded many times, by many performers. The best
known versions are one by Nina
Simone in 1966, and one by David Bowie released in 1976/1981 as a tribute to Simone.
Love me, love me; say
you do.
Let me fly away with you.
For my love is like the wind
And wild is the wind.
Give me more than one caress;
Satisfy this hungriness.
Let the wind blow through your heart,
For wild is the wind.
*You touch me;
I hear the sound of mandolins.
You kiss me,
And, with the kiss, the world begins.
You're spring to me, all things to me;
You're life itself!
Like a leaf clings to a tree,
Oh my darling, cling to me,
For we're creatures of the wind,
And wild is the wind, the wind.
Wild is my love for you.
(Instrumental
interlude and pick up at *.)
