Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter (/biːˈjɒnseɪ/bee-YON-say; née Knowles; born September 4, 1981) is an American singer and actress.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas,
Beyoncé performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child. She
rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Destiny's Child,
one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Beyoncé
is often cited as an influence by other artists.
During Destiny's Child's hiatus, Beyoncé made
her theatrical film debut with a role in the US box-office number-one Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
and began her solo music career. She became the first music act to debut at
number one with their first six solo studio albums on the Billboard 200.
Her debut album Dangerously
in Love (2003) featured four Billboard Hot 100 top five songs, including the number-one singles "Crazy in Love"
featuring rapper Jay-Z and
"Baby
Boy" featuring singer-rapper Sean Paul.
Following the disbandment of Destiny's Child in 2006, she released her second
solo album, B'Day,
which contained her first US number-one solo single "Irreplaceable",
and "Beautiful Liar",
which topped the charts in most countries. Beyoncé continued her acting career
with starring roles in The Pink Panther (2006), Dreamgirls (2006), and Obsessed (2009). Her marriage to Jay-Z and her portrayal of Etta James in Cadillac Records (2008) influenced her third album, I
Am... Sasha Fierce (2008), which earned a
record-setting six
Grammy Awards in 2010. It spawned the UK number-one
single "If I Were a Boy", the US number-one single
"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)"
and the top five single "Halo".
After splitting from her manager and father Mathew Knowles in 2010, Beyoncé released the album (2011); it was influenced by
1970s funk, 1980s
pop, and 1990s soul.
She achieved back-to-back widespread critical acclaim for her sonically
experimental visual albums, Beyoncé (2013) and Lemonade (2016); the latter was the
world's best-selling album of 2016 and the most acclaimed album of her career,
exploring themes of infidelity and womanism. In
2018, she released Everything
Is Love, a collaborative album with her husband,
Jay-Z, as the Carters.
As a featured artist, Beyoncé topped the Billboard Hot 100 with the remixes of
"Perfect" by Ed Sheeran in 2017 and "Savage"
by Megan
Thee Stallion in 2020. The same year, she made her
directorial and screenwriting debut with the musical film and visual album Black Is King,
which received widespread critical acclaim after premiering on Disney+.
Beyoncé is one of the world's best-selling recording artists,
having sold 118 million records worldwide. Her success during the 2000s was
recognized with the Recording Industry Association of America's
Top Certified Artist of the Decade, as well as Billboard magazine's Top Radio Songs Artist and the Top Female Artist of the
Decade. Beyoncé is the most nominated woman in the Grammy Award's
history and has the second most wins for a woman with a total of 24. She is
also the most awarded artist at the MTV
Video Music Awards, with 24 wins, including the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. In
2014, she became the highest-earning black musician in history and was listed
among Time's
100 most influential people in the world for a second year in a row. Forbes ranked
her as the most powerful female in entertainment on their 2015 and 2017 lists.
She occupied the sixth place for Time's Person
of the Year in 2016, and in 2020, was named one
of the 100 women who defined the last century by the same publication.
Beyoncé was also included on Encyclopædia
Britannica's 100 Women list in 2019, for
her contributions to the entertainment industry.
I Am... Sasha Fierce is the third studio album by American singer Beyoncé.
It was released on November 12, 2008, by Columbia
Records and Music World Entertainment. In its
original release, the album was formatted as a double album,
intending to market Beyoncé's dichotomous artistic persona. The first disc, I Am..., contains slow and
midtempo pop and R&B ballads, while
the second, Sasha Fierce (named after Beyoncé's on-stage alter ego),
focuses on more uptempo beats that blend electropop and Europop elements. In composing the songs' lyrics, Beyoncé worked with writers, with
each session accompanied by live orchestration.
Beyoncé credited both her husband—rapper Shawn Carter—and jazz
singer Etta James for inspiring her to push the limits of her songwriting and
artistry. Musically, I Am... drew inspiration from folk and alternative rock,
while blending acoustic guitar elements into contemporary ballads, and its tracks
were written and produced by Beyoncé, during collaborative efforts with Babyface,
Tricky Stewart,
The-Dream and Ryan Tedder.
Sasha Fierce boasted
production from Darkchild and Sean
Garrett.
I
Am... Sasha Fierce received mixed reviews from music
critics, but was a commercial success nonetheless, debuting at number one on
the US Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 482,000 units, earning Beyoncé her
third consecutive US number-one solo album. The album has earned one diamond
and over thirty platinum certifications in separate worldwide markets, being
certified double
platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 16, 2009, selling over three million copies in the
United States. As
of 2015, I Am... Sasha Fierce has sold over 8
million copies worldwide. The album garnered seven Grammy Award nominations at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony
(2010), including a nomination for Album of the Year, winning five and
eventually collecting a record setting six wins—the most awards won in one
night by a female artist.
The
album was marketed with the release of several singles, including "If
I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)",
both of which charted highly internationally. The
former topped the charts in over eight countries and reached number three on
the Billboard Hot 100,
with the latter becoming her fifth number-one single on the Hot 100 chart. "Diva" and "Ego" were released exclusively in the
United States, while "Halo" and "Sweet Dreams" were promoted internationally
as the third and fourth singles, respectively. "Broken-Hearted Girl" was released internationally
as the fifth single, while "Video Phone" was released in September 2009
as the overall eighth, and "Why Don't You Love Me"
was released in July 2010 as the ninth and final single. To
further promote the album, Beyoncé made several award show and televised
appearances across Europe and America, and embarking on the worldwide I
Am... World Tour (2009–10).
Si yo fuera un chico
Sólo por una vez
Yo me vestiría como quiero
Con lo que vea primero y me voy
Saldría a buscar
Chicas por montón
Mis amigos que són leales
Siempre van acompañarme hasta el fin
Cada noche a mentir
Si yo fuera un chico
Sé que podría saber
Comprender mucho mejor
Lo que es amar a una mujer
Sabria escuchar
Pues conozco el dolor
De perder a quién se quiere
Porque ignoras lo que tienes
Y quedas sin saber que pasó
Si yo fuera un chico
Pero ves no lo soy
Los chicos són de molde
Y nosostras somos de corazón
Se piensan que són
Los del sexo superior
Pero cuando lo queremos
Los vence nuestra seducción, seducción
Si yo fuera un chico
Sé que podría saber
Comprender mucho mejor
Lo que es amar a una mujer
Sabria escuchar
Pues conozco el dolor
De perder a quién se quiere
Porque ignoras lo que tienes
Y quedas sin saber que pasó
Es muy tarde ya vez para regressar
Perdonarte otra vez
Ya no lo vas a lograr
El lugar que ocupabas
Tú, ya no está más
Pero eres un chico,
que le vas hacer
No puedes comprender
Que se siente al comprender mejor
Y amar enserio a una mujer
No sabes escuchar
No te importa el dolor
Hasta que pierdes a quién quieres
Porque ignoras lo que tienes
Y queda sin saber que pasó
Pero eres un chico.
