The Pussycat Dolls are an American girl group and dance ensemble,
founded in Los Angeles,
California,
by choreographer Robin Antin in 1995 as a burlesque troupe. At the suggestion of Jimmy Iovine,
Antin decided to take the burlesque troupe mainstream as a pop group. Antin negotiated
a record deal with Interscope Geffen A&M Records in 2003 turning the group into a music franchise comprising Nicole
Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar,
Ashley Roberts,
Jessica Sutta,
Melody Thornton,
and Kimberly Wyatt.
Their debut single, "Sway", was featured on the
soundtrack of the 2004 film Shall We Dance?
The Pussycat Dolls achieved worldwide success
with number-one singles "Don't Cha",
"Stickwitu",
"Buttons", and their multi-platinum debut album PCD (2005). However, despite their commercial success, the group was plagued by
internal conflict due to the emphasis on Scherzinger, the group's lead
vocalist, and the subordinate treatment of the other members. Bachar's
departure from the group preceded the release of their second and final studio álbum
Doll Domination (2008), which contains hit singles "When I Grow Up",
"I Hate This Part",
and "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)". Following
the completion of their 2009
world tour, the group went on hiatus and
fully disbanded in 2010. The original recording line-up, minus Thornton,
announced their reunion in 2019 with an upcoming tour and a new
album.
The Pussycat Dolls brand diversified into
merchandise, reality
television programs, a Las Vegas act, product endorsements, spin-off recording groups (Girlicious,
Paradiso Girls,
G.R.L.), and
other ventures. Billboard ranked the Pussycat Dolls as the 80th most successful musical act of
the 2000s. The group has sold 55 million records worldwide, making them one of
the best-selling girl groups of all time. In
2012, the Pussycat Dolls ranked 100th on VH1's 100 Greatest Women in Music, and
as the tenth all-girl group
Doll Domination is the second studio album by American girl group the
Pussycat Dolls, released on September 19, 2008
by Interscope
Records. The album's release was preceded by the
departure of the group's longest-standing member Carmit Bachar.
Development began in February 2008 where the group worked with previous
collaborators Sean Garrett,
Polow da Don and Timbaland and new ones such as Darkchild,
J-Roc and Chase N Cashe. Polow da
Don, R. Kelly and Snoop Dogg also make guest performances on the album. Four songs on Doll
Domination were originally recorded for the lead singer Nicole
Scherzinger's debut solo album, Her Name is
Nicole, which was shelved after the under-performance of its preceding singles.
The album consists of a mixture of pop and R&B songs that also blend elements of dance,
electropop with lyrics that tackle fame, sexuality and relationships. All of
the lead and background vocals were sang by Scherzinger with support from Melody Thornton,
whilst the remaining group members are only credited for background vocals.
Upon release, Doll Domination received mixed reviews from music critics.
The album debuted at number four on the US Billboard
200 becoming the group's highest
charting album. It
experienced similar peaks in international territories, debuting at number
three in Canada and number four in Australia and the United Kingdom. Doll
Domination was later reissued in multiple versions throughout 2009. The
album was supported with a world tour titled Doll
Domination Tour in 2009.
The album was preceded by the release of the
US Billboard Hot 100 top-ten single "When I Grow Up"
and the UK top-ten hit "Whatcha Think About That"
(featuring Missy Elliott).
Other successful
singles were "I Hate This Part", "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)",
and "Hush Hush; Hush Hush", all of which
reached the top ten in numerous countries worldwide. Although "Jai Ho!
(You Are My Destiny)" became a number-one hit in Australia, Ireland,
Finland, among other countries, the single caused tension on the group as
Scherzinger was billed as a featured artist. Despite their commercial success,
unhappiness of Scherzinger's spotlight and prominence within the group grew
leading to a public outburst by Thornton during the tour. In early-2010, the
group disbanded to pursue solo projects, before reforming in 2019 with the
promise of new music. In 2019, Doll Domination was
re-released, excluding the R. Kelly collaboration "Out of This Club"
following the airing of the Surviving
R. Kelly documentary and subsequent abuse
allegations against the singer.
La la la la la la… La
la la la
Mr. Invisible, tell me how did I miss you, boy
How could you have never caught me eye
Were you there all alone, or were you just shy?
Mr. I never noticed you, tell me that you ain't got a girl at home
See you're a catch, I wanna snatch you up
I know that I slept on you now I woke up
Boy how did I miss that smile, your style, your game, juicy
If you lick your lips one more time, boy you about to have it, yeah
'Cause I like it
smooth like that, you're cool like that
Must be good like that, I can tell by that
I'm gonna love the way you love me, I'm gonna love the way you love me
Staring at you too like that, oh like that
What it do like that, how you do all that
I'm gonna love the way you love me, you're gonna love the way you love
me
La la la la la la
(la, la, la)
La la la la (la, la, la)
So come with me and walk for a while
Can I spring you outta here and talk for awhile
Gotta know what the deal with you, Mr. Now I'm really feelin' you
'Cuz I even like the
way you sip your drink
Just enough ice on you to make me think
What I gotta do for you to scoop me up
What I say to be the one you touch
Boy how did I miss that smile, your style, the game, juicy
If you got a little extra style, then won't you let me have it?
I like how your
t-shirt cut you right
And how you melt me deep inside
Oh, you're running in a different league
Don't make me chase you, boy, you know I'm game
By the way you're rocking it in the Nike's
Won't you let me play on your team tonight?
We can go one-on-one, you and me
That's the way that it
should be, yeah.
