Dua Lipa (/ˈduːəˈliːpə/; Albanian
pronunciation: [ˈdua ˈlipa];
born 22 August 1995) is an English singer and songwriter. After working as a
model, she signed with Warner
Music Group in 2015 and released her self-titled debut album in 2017. The album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart,
and produced nine singles, including "Be the One" and "IDGAF",
and the UK number-one single "New Rules",
which also peaked at number six in the US. In 2018, Lipa won the Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.
Released in April 2018, the single "One Kiss"
with Calvin Harris peaked at number one in the UK and became the longest-running number-one single for a female
artist in 2018. It won her the 2019 Brit Award for Song of the Year. In
2019, she was also awarded the Grammy
Award for Best New Artist, and "Electricity", a
collaboration with Silk City,
won her the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
The success of the singles helped her self-titled album become one of the most-streamed albums on Spotify and achieve platinum certifications. Her second studio album, Future Nostalgia,
was released in March 2020 to critical acclaim. It is her first UK number-one album; its lead single
"Don't Start Now" became one of the most
commercially successful songs of 2020; it is one of four songs (the only song
by a female artist) that has spent all of 2020 on the Billboard Hot 100. It
peaked at number two on both the UK
Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100.
Lipa has received various accolades,
including two Grammy Awards,
three Brit Awards and two MTV
Europe Music Awards. She has also been nominated for
three Billboard
Music Awards, an American
Music Award, and ten MTV
Video Music Awards.
"Electricity" is a song by
British-American music duo Silk
City and English singer Dua Lipa featuring American DJ Diplo and British musician Mark
Ronson, from the Silk City's debut EP of the same
name (2019). The song was written by Silk City members: Ronson and Diplo,
alongside Lipa, Diana
Gordon, Romy Madley Croft, Jr Blender,
Jacob Olofsson, Rami Dawod, Maxime Picard and Clément Picard, with production
from Silk City and additional production from Jarami,
Riton,
Alex Metric,
and Blender. It was released for digital
download and streaming through Columbia
Records and Sony Music on 6 September 2018 as the fourth single from the EP. The song was
also included on the super deluxe edition of Lipa's debut album, Dua Lipa: Complete Edition (2018).
Musically, "Electricity" draws from
Chicago house and 1990s music,
and is a dance-pop and piano house song with disco-house,
diva house and electropop elements. Lyrically, it sees a couple who has found a kindred spirit, with one
party also comforting the other. The song was met with acclaim
from music critics,
with many complimenting the production. It won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. The
song reached number 4 and 62 respectively on the UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Hot 100,
and has a platinum certification in both countries, by the British Phonographic Industry(BPI) and
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), respectively.
The music
video for "Electricity" was
directed by Bradley & Pablo, and is set during the Northeast blackout of 2003. In the video, Lipa throws a party
in her loft, where she turns the power back on with her dance moves, while
Ronson and Diplo get stuck in an elevator. Critics praised Lipa's performance
in the video. The song was also accompanied by a vertical video and dance video. Silk City and Lipa promoted the single with
numerous live performances, including ones at the American Music Awards of 2018, Jimmy
Kimmel Live!, and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. The
song has received several remixes, including ones by The
Black Madonna and MK.
