Although the song was popularized in the early '60s by The Limelighters, Mary Hopkin wrote the best-known recording, which was produced by Paul McCartney and became the UK's No. 1 singles hit and second in the United States. The song was translated into Spanish (with the title "Que tiempo tan feliz"), for French (with the title "Le temps des fleurs"), for Italian (with the title "Quelli erano giorni"), for the German (with the title "Am jenem Tag") and Portuguese (with the title "Those Times", in the voice of the Young Girl singer Joelma). Mary Hopkin's version was released on the BBC's Opportunity Knocks television program. Singer Sandie Shaw also recorded the song, but did not have the same success as the version of Mary Hopkin.

Note: The real authors of the song that are called "Dorogoi Dlinnoyu" ("By a long road") are Boris Ivanovitch Fomin (melody) and the poet Konstantin Nikolaevitch Podrevskiy.
