"I Left My Heart in San Francisco"
is a popular song, written in the fall of 1953 in Brooklyn,
New York, with music by George
Cory and lyrics by Douglass Cross
(1920–1975) and best known as the signature
song of Tony Bennett.
In 1962, the song was
released as a single by Bennett on Columbia Records as the b-side to "Once Upon a Time", peaked at #19 on
the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and was also included on
the album I Left My Heart in San Francisco. It also reached number
seven on the Easy Listening chart. The song is one of the official anthems for
the city of San Francisco. In 2018, it was selected
for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library
of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant
The loveliness of Paris
seems somehow sadly gay
The glory that was Rome
is of another day
I've been terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan
I'm going home to my city by the bay.
I left my heart ...in San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me.
To be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air
I don't care!
My love waits there... in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
your golden sun will shine for me!
